There appear to be an increasing number of sightings of hornets in Wales. Their nests should normally be left alone and they will leave you alone. Avoid walking in front of the nest entrance – just give them a wide berth. Beekeepers are not equipped to help you if a nest needs to be removed. This is a job for professional pest control companies.
You may have heard of the Asian Hornet. This is an invasive species and government agencies are responsible for monitoring the spread of this pest across the UK and removing and destroying any nests. These insects are also called Yellow Legged Hornets as their brown legs are tipped with “yellow boots”.
The Yellow Legged Hornet is on the left in the illustration and the native hornet on the right.

Beekeepers and the government agencies would be grateful for your help in reporting sightings of the Yellow Legged Hornets (quite often in imported vegetables, timber or other produce).
Please see the advice on our Yellow Legged Hornets page.
